CHATTER: NEW RULES FOR FALL.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Say goodbye to intrasquad football scrimmages the week before the season begins. And welcome back scrimmages between teams.

The Southern Section, by a 32-30 vote, decided last week to allow schools within a 30-mile radius to scrimmage against each other the week before the season starts. Teams haven't done that since 1977.

``I think it's a good thing,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said. ``I know the powers that be feel we want to turn that into an 11th game like the junior colleges have, but that is farthest from the truth. Coaches don't want to play an 11th game. (A scrimmage) is a better indication of evaluating talent.''

Right now, City Section schools are not included, but administrator Jeff Halpern Jeff Halpern (b. May 3 1976, Potomac, Maryland) is a National Hockey League player with the Dallas Stars. Ice Hockey career

Soon, Julio Castillo again will discover life without Terry Davila.

Davila, who played soccer at Reseda High and Cal State Northridge and later coached Castillo at Reseda, took the Northridge men's coaching job last week. Before, he had been helping Castillo, who is the Reseda boys' soccer coach.

Castillo owes much of his success to Davila. He freely admits Davila helped him learn how to coach and discipline his players.

Now Davila's gone, but he's confident Castillo is ready to go it alone. . . .

It doesn't happen often, but high school teammates faced each other last week in the major leagues. On Thursday night, Montclair Prep teammates Russ Ortiz Russell Reid Ortiz (born June 5, 1974 in Encino, California), is a Major League baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Before returning to the Giants, Ortiz had previously played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles and the Atlanta Braves.  (Giants) pitched to Brad Fullmer Bradley Ryan Fullmer is a major league baseball player who bats left handed and throws right handed. Club soccer teams are numerous around the valleys, but few are as successful as Adolfo Perez's L.A. Force girls' teams. Several of players have won California Youth Soccer Association titles and earned college scholarships, including Sabrina Love to St. Mary's, Melissa Cleal to CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge , Jennifer Valentine to Pennsylvania and Lindsey Horn to Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:
