``I saw the 619 area code pop up on my caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party.  and was like, here we go, this is it,'' McKay said. ``I'm glad it worked out with them because if this fell through, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

McKay said the Aztecs began recruiting him when he went to San Diego to watch them practice along with teammate Justin Shaw and dropped off a highlight tape to the San Diego State coaching staff.

``Before that, they weren't recruiting me at all,'' he said. ``But I figured I had to do something. Coaches help you get to school, but you have to help out too.'' ...

A physical yet speedy receiver from Birmingham of Lake Balboa, the 6- foot-3, 190-pound Ward had just 27 catches in the Patriots' spread offense as a senior but took them for 642 yards, an average of 23.8 yards per catch.

``I think it's going to be a great fit for him,'' Birmingham coach Ed Croson said. ``They like to throw the ball and he is a big, young receiver with a lot of potential.''

The Canyon boys' basketball team lost two consecutive games to open Foothill League play, but the Cowboys didn't flinch.

``It was tough and we got a little down, but we knew our time would eventually come around,'' Canyon guard Sean Coen said. ``Looking back, if you're going to lose two straight at any point, the best time is right at the beginning because you have time to get things back on track.''

Clearly, Canyon (14-7, 3-2) has done that, especially with Coen and Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. For Coen, it was a difficult transition from football to basketball.

``The mindsets are completely different,'' Coen said. ``In football, you are trying to out-physical people, but in basketball you have to step back a little bit and outthink out·think

``I've know Russell for three years and that's the first time I've ever seen him smile on the court,'' Goldman said.

White's grin was the result of the Coyotes' dramatic victory over Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  last week in which they overcame an eight-point deficit in the final 45 seconds of regulation to force overtime.

``Russell is the type of guy who's never satisfied no matter what the team's record is, or whether they've won or lost,'' Goldman said. ``But he was smiling big-time when I saw him.''

White, who said Calabasas got ``the break of the century'' when a Simi Valley inbound pass bounced off the foot of a Pioneers player and into the hands of Calabasas guard Drew Housman, who hit a layup and was fouled for a three-point play, chided Goldman for not being at the game.
