CHATTER: LOYOLA HIGH RUNNER COMMITS TO CAL.

The Cubs finished third in the boys' Div. I and II individual sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC on Saturday. Matusak, who won the race in 14 minutes, 33 seconds in 2003, took second place in 14:43, behind El Toro's Brandon Bethke (14:30).

Loyola, the No. 1 team in Div. II, continues to gear up for the end of the championship season, the apex of which is the state meet in Fresno on Nov. 27.

UC Irvine is again proving to be a popular destination for area baseball players. Crespi High of Encino standout Michael Gilmartain committed to the Anteaters, making him the third local product from the class of 2005 to commit to Irvine, which already has 12 area players on its roster.

``It's a lot different here. I'm coaching a lot of kids who are playing the game for the first time,'' he said. ``You learn a lot more when you lose than you do when you win. But don't get me wrong. I want to win.''

West Ranch has three more games, including a showdown against fellow first-year school Golden Valley (1-5) in the season finale.

``If we don't win that one, I might find a for-sale sign in front of my house - put there by someone else,'' he said with a smile.

Former Hart High of Newhall football standout Chris Frome, a junior defensive lineman at Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. The Wolverines' standout runner took a two-year break from cross country to focus on track, and the strategy worked as she finished as the Southern Section's Div. III 1,600-meter runner-up in 2003.

Farias-Eisner has returned to the hills and dirt paths of cross country in her senior year, with impressive results. She won the girls' Div. III sweepstakes race Friday at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational in Walnut in 18 minutes, 1 second. Her time over the 2.91-mile course was a Mt. SAC personal best - 56 seconds better than her freshman time.

MARK LAWRENCE Mark H. Lawrence, is the principal trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He was appointed to this position in 1974.

Lawrence was educated at the University of Michigan and the Curtis Intitute of Music. His teachers have included Carlos Rivera, Allen H.

Her contributions, especially her strong putting, have helped coach Ken Johnson's Crescenta Valley team start 9-5, defeat Foothill League-leader and No. 3-ranked Valencia last week 233-242, and stay within a stroke of No. 2-ranked Saugus in an early-season 210-211 loss at Vista Valencia.
