CHATTER: LOCAL PLAYERS HAVE MAJOR OPINIONS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

Like the major-leaguers they hope to one day become, the area high school baseball players pay attention to what the professionals do. Since the season began Sunday with Cleveland at the Angels, we give a voice to some players who were only too willing to give their opinions:

Robert Marcial, Cleveland of Reseda shortstop: ``I've liked the Dodgers ever since I was little. Their getting Brian Jordan

They've got (Paul LoDuca), Jordan, Shawn Green Shawn David Green (born November 10, 1972, in Des Plaines, Illinois) is a 6' 4" left-handed Major League Baseball player. Fullmer last played at the Major League level during the 2004 season with the Texas Rangers.
will have a breakout year. He played with my uncle (Julio Marcial on a youth team). He can be the DH.''

Josh Fogel, Saugus shortstop: ``I'm a diehard Yankees fan and I think they'll go all the way. They've got the best pitching. And hitting? (Jason Giambi Jason Gilbert Giambi (born January 8, 1971) is a Major League Baseball player who is the 1st baseman and designated hitter for the New York Yankees.

, how can you go wrong with that? The Mets will be better, but I hate the Mets.''

``The Angels, they won't win more than 60 games. Look who've they got: Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. ``The Dodgers, I went (Friday) night. Their bullpen is so poor. (Terry) Mulholland and (Jesse) Orosco, those guys are so old, I don't see how they can still compete. Their starters, if they stay healthy, they can be good, but Andy Ashby

? I'm sorry, but that guy's a walking double play. I like Shawn Green. He's got a good quality stick. I'd like to see Green get more fastballs.''

Brandon Canning, Agoura pitcher: ``The New York Mets

``I don't think the Yankees are going to be as good. Pitching, they've got five aces and a closer, so they'll be in every game, but their hitting's not like last year.

``The Dodgers, I don't see them doing anything. The Cardinals, they've got Tino Martinez, so they'll be strong.''

          ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

          JAKE COASH

          Senior

          Canyon baseball

The hard-throwing lefty is usually at his best in big games, and such was the case last week when the Cowboys faced Saugus for first place in the Foothill League. Taking on an offense that averaged nearly seven runs a game, Coash held the Centurions to one run and three hits, getting better as the game progressed. He finished with a season-high 14 strikeouts, including the final seven batters. Although Canyon won 17-1, Coash did not have the luxury of a comfortable lead until his team scored 13 runs in the seventh inning. He did not allow a hit after the second inning.

Coash (4-1) has 45 strikeouts and a 1.45 ERA through 29 innings, holding opponents to a .151 batting average.

CHANEL TRIPP TRIPP Teaching Resource for Instructors in Prehospital Pediatrics

          Junior

          Rio Mesa softball

Tripp pitched consecutive shutouts against Pacific View League-rival Oxnard on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the first game, the right-hander threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts, as Rio Mesa of Oxnard won 10-0 in five innings (mercy rule). She followed with a two-hitter and eight strikeouts as Rio Mesa won 2-0.

``Chanel started a bit slowly this season because she was injured (back), but she's really coming around,'' coach John Velasquez said.

Tripp, a returning All-Daily News selection who has committed to Cal, is 5-2 with a 0.00 ERA. She has 66 strikeouts in 44 innings, an average of 10.5 per seven innings.

          UP AND COMER

          DONOVAN CHIN

          Hillcrest Christian-Granada Hills

Chin, 14 and in the eighth grade, was named team MVP after playing three years on the A team (the middle school equivalent of varsity). He played guard, averaged 12 points a game and was among the team leaders in rebounds, points and assists.

Nominate other outstanding junior varsity or middle school athletes by calling (818) 713-3611.

          HEAD 2 HEAD

Matchup of the week: VONNIE FULFORD

          Birmingham

          Sprinter

MICHELLE MICHELLE Mid-Infrared Echelle Spectrograph  STINNETTE

          Cleveland

          Sprinter

Two of the top sprinters in girls' track headline the meet between Birmingham of Van Nuys and Cleveland of Reseda, a likely preview of the City Section championship. They are scheduled to go up against each other in the 100 and 200 meters. Stinnette has concentrated more on long sprints this season. She has run the 400 meters and 1,600 relay, not concentrating on speed needed for the 100. Fulford likely has the edge in the 100 as a result, but Stinnette comes back with an advantage in the 200.

          Friday, 3:30 p.m. at Birmingham.
