Taking on the best right away proved a good move for La Canada as the Spartans did well enough to climb to No. 1 in this week's Div. III rankings.

La Canada began what Naeve believes is the program's most challenging schedule ever by upsetting then-No. 1 Montebello 15-11 on Thursday. The Spartans (3-2) followed with a 2-2 showing at the Menlo tournament over the weekend, where they came within a goal against defending Central Section champion Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also used in the Anglican Church.

Locals were well represented on the National Junior Olympic water polo All-America teams. Agoura junior Meghan Corso was honored for the third consecutive year, earning second team recognition in the 18-and-under division. Her L.A. Water Polo Club teammate and Harvard-Westlake graduate Julie Spataru was an honorable mention selection.

La Canada players Devon Borisoff and Jordan Thompson earned honorable-mention recognition in the 16-and-under division, and Newbury Park graduate Robbie Bauer made the 18-and-under first team as a member of Pepperdine's club program. ...

Junior Heather Wordon of the Cal Lutheran cross country team set a team record for fastest time on the Westmont course when she finished fourth at Saturday's Westmont Invitational in 19 minutes, 22 seconds. ...

Jaedtke anchored a first-place finish for the Highlanders cross country team at the Woodbridge Invitational at Woodbridge High in Irvine on Saturday night. His time of 14 minutes, 49 seconds (ninth place overall) was the Highlanders' fastest and it helped the team pass 2003 champion Don Lugo of Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  Hills and a touted team from Winter Park, Fla. Jaedtke's teammates, Hudson Andrews, Michael Cybulski, Matt Gulden and Daniel Benson all posted sub-15:45 times on the 3-mile course.

Villela, who tied for fourth in her age group at the Callaway Junior World Championship this summer, started her high school golf career on a tear by earning medalist honors in her first two matches for the top-ranked Highlanders. She shot even-par 37 in a 219-236 nonleague victory over Chaminade of West Hills at Woodley Lakes, then 1-over-par 34 in a 190-298 City 1-A League win over Birmingham of Lake Balboa as Granada Hills opened its bid for a fourth consecutive City Section championship.

Kuykendall, a Foothill League frosh/soph champion at 800 and 1,600 meters last season in track, is one of the youth centerpieces on a young Hart varsity girls' cross country team. She is running at No. 2 behind Brooke Russell, who also is a sophomore.
