When the Valencia girls' basketball team upset then-top-ranked Saugus at the Valencia tournament and started the year 14-2, it seemed the young Vikings were a legitimate contender for the Foothill League title.

But those hopes were dashed quickly as Valencia lost three of its first four league games.

Even after beating Canyon and Burroughs of Burbank in successive games, the Vikings can do no better than third place with a 3-4 record. That's because Valencia lost 60-58 to second-place Saugus on Tuesday night and fell three games back in the standings with three games to go. Saugus would win a tiebreaker tie·break·er

since they beat Valencia twice in league play.

``It definitely hurt because we're a better team than we've showed so far,'' said junior forward Tamaiya Smith, who scored 21 points in the loss to Saugus. ``I don't feel like our league record reflects how good our team is.''

What the record does reflect is that Valencia is a young team with a pattern of inconsistency.

``We still make young mistakes, but I don't want to make any excuses,'' Valencia coach Jerry Mike said. ``I thought we were going to come out (in the Saugus game) like we did against Burroughs, but we just didn't bring it. ... There was no sense of urgency and I was disappointed in that.''
