--Taft improves baseball field: A quick glance at the field, where weeds are sprouting in the infield dirt and there is no left-field fence, makes it easy for Greg Venger to understand why serious baseball players don't want to play at Taft of Woodland Hills.

Taft has spent recent years as a perennial cellar-dwellar in the highly competitive West Valley League. Things have been so discouraging, promising players usually transfer after a year or two.

Venger, hired this summer as Taft's new coach, is determined to end the trend.

The 1995 Taft graduate already has spent the past few months in a rebuilding process he hopes will restore the Toreadors to the type of program he remembers from his playing days, when he teamed with the likes of current major-leaguer Gabe Kapler

Among the upgrades scheduled for this season include new infield grass and dirt, a remodeled scoreboard, improvements to the dugouts and an outfield fence that is expected to be in place by January.

Venger instituted fund-raising for the first time in years to finance the project.

Another important change is Venger's emphasis on offseason workouts, which will include playing in a fall league.

of Woodland Hills. However, Venger already is encouraged by increased interest in the program, noting that players from other sports have asked about playing.

``Things are changing,'' he said. ``I'm challenging the players. I'm challenging myself. I'm challenging the community. You've got guys that are third, fourth string sitting on the bench at El Camino that would be starters here. We'll make this a place they want to play.''...

    ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

The Vikings fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter before Herrick went to work, first scoring on runs of 4 and 1 yards in the second quarter and then completing a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and a 13-yarder in the fourth to pull Valencia to a 28-28 tie. That set up Brian Malette's game-winning 29-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.

    MELANIE De LEON

    Junior

    Saugus

De Leon, one of the top young golfers in the region, enjoyed an impressive afternoon against Quartz Hill on Thursday, shooting a 1-under-par 35 at Palmdale's Rancho Vista Golf Course. De Leon, who has been golfing just two years, set a goal this season to shoot par, and in one of the first matches of the year, she did just that and better.

``I've played the course once before and I really like it,'' De Leon said. ``It was a great day.''

De Leon stayed out of trouble most of the day, and even when she did encounter problems, she was able to work her way out.

On the seventh hole she got up and down from out of a bunker to salvage par.

The sophomore 2-meter player is a starter on the Sharks' junior varsity water polo team but has shown enough promise that he is expected to see occasional playing time this year on the varsity team, which is ranked fifth in Southern Section Div. IV. He also started on last year's league-champion JV team.

    THEN AND NOW

Seventeen years ago this week, a 15-year-old sophomore running back from Crespi High of Encino was beginning what would become one of the most prolific prep careers in state history.

As Russell White received congratulations for scoring his third touchdown Friday night, wide-eyed Crespi High School fans couldn't hold back their excitement.

``Russell is insane,'' one Celt supporter boasted. ``He's a future Heisman Trophy winner.''

Crespi fans are getting a little carried away over the 15-year-old sophomore, but who can blame them?

White did nothing to hurt his growing reputation Friday, rushing for 108 yards on nine carries and catching three passes for 77 yards in the No. 2-rated Celts' 33-7 victory over visiting Burbank. Although White's per-carry average dropped from 37.5 to 19.8 yards after two games, no one was complaining afterward.

White would go on to rush for 5,998 yards at Crespi, then a state record and now fourth in area history. His 84 touchdowns are still third in Southern Section history.

White went on to become the University of California's career rushing leader, gaining more than 1,000 yards as a sophomore, junior and senior, but was only a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 1992. He played in only five games in 1993 and was never again able to make an NFL roster for the regular season.
