CHATTER: HART'S MURRAY TO RETIRE.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

It's the middle of the week and Hart baseball coach Bud Murray sits alone at the baseball diamond. The sun shines on the bright green grass and sprinklers drop water on the field.

It's a poignant moment because this is one of the last times Murray will do this. He has announced his retirement and the Indians have as little as one more game and as many as five remaining.

``It's peaceful for me to come out here and water and smooth the dirt out a bit,'' said Murray, dressed in blue shorts, Hart shirt, white socks, brown sneakers sneakers

On this day, his mind reflects back to 1974. Lompoc beat Hart 3-2 in the playoffs and went on to win the Southern Section championship.

``We had a good team,'' Murray said. ``We had a call by the umpires that took us out of the game.''

Then he remembers the 1989 team - the only one he ever guided to the Southern Section final. Cerritos won that June day at Dodger Stadium     [ .

``Lance Migita hit a shot in the gap. Their guy came over and made a nice diving catch. Chris Vasquez hit one to the base of the wall. We hit a few to the wall. If we were playing at a high school field. . .,'' he said. ``We haven't been lucky in the playoffs. This game of baseball, you've got to have luck.''

Hart's final chance to send Murray out a winner begins Friday against Arroyo. Murray said it's hard to be leaving after more than 30 years, but he'll be satisfied as long as one thing happens - the same thing he always has asked of his teams.

``If the kids play well, I'll go out of Hart High a happy man,'' he said. ``Winning a CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing.
