CHATTER: GLENDALE, LA CANADA FIT TO BE TIED.

Glendale withstood a late LaCanada drive in the final seconds after having a potential winning field-goal attempt blocked in a 21-21 nonleague football tie Thursday at Moyse Field.

Victor Barba's 32-yard attempt was blocked with 47 seconds remaining and La Canada took over at its own 18-yard line.

Duke McCaffrey completed two consecutive passes to move the Spartans down to Glendale's 38-yard line with 28 seconds left. But McCaffrey was sacked on the next two plays to end the game.

La Canada tied the score on the first play of the fourth quarter when McCaffrey connected with Brian Kimball on a 75-yard touchdown pass. Glendale responded with a 9-minute, 21-second drive, moving from its own 13-yard line to the La Canada 23.

On a fourth-and-three play, Barba's pass went off the hands of Charles Crosby and into the hands of Jean Khajarian, but the pass was broken up by Ryan Muller to turn the ball over on downs.

Struggles continue for winless Grant

Grant of Van Nuys was held to 70 yards offense, including zero yards rushing, as they dropped to 0-3 following a 55-0 nonleague football loss to Morningside of Inglewood at Coleman Stadium.

Travis Harvey completed 11 of 16 passes for 239 yards, including four touchdowns, three of which went to Davion Archie (five receptions for 84 yards). Morningside's Brian Nam rushed for 119 yards, including three touchdowns.

Hollywood drops second straight

Devin Fuller rushed for 90yards -- including touchdown runs of 34 and 18 yards -- and he also returned the second-half kickoff for 92 yards as host Blair downed visiting Hollywood 54-0 at Muir High in Pasadena.

Blair scored on eight of its nine possessions and held Hollywood to four yards passing. Ramiro Guerrido led Hollywood (1-2) with 24 rushing yards.

C.V. halts Arcadia's league winning streak 

Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta's girls' tennis team once dominated the Pacific League, winning 50 consecutive matches from 1999-2004.

After six straight losses to Arcadia, the Falcons made sure the Apaches wouldn't get any closer to their league record Thursday.

Behind seven doubles victories, C.V. halted Arcadia's 33-match league winning streak with an 11-5 triumph, with both coaches agreeing not to play the final two sets.

"We were overmatched in 2004, we caught up a teeny bit in '05 and our singles caught up a little bit more last year," C.V. coach Tom Gossard said. "This is the first time (since 2003) that we matched them physically and matched them competitively. Sweeping the last round says a lot about these girls."

The teams split the first 10 sets, but the Falcons' (2-1, 1-0) strength in doubles showed as Anna Kim and Tiffany Man completed a sweep to clinch C.V.'s ninth win.

Erin Levoir and Lindsay Walter added singles victories to secure the Falcons' first win against Arcadia (3-1, 0-1) since Oct. 21, 2003.

Park, Cho help Falcons sweep Pacific

Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta posted the two lowest scores to distance the field by 11 strokes at the first Pacific League girls' golf match Thursday at Brookside Golf Course No. 2.

Park shot an even-par 36 and Christine Cho was a stroke behind for the defending-champion Falcons, who finished with a 220.

Burbank, led by Amanda Keith's 38, finished second with 231. Keith tied Burroughs of Burbank's Emily Tubert for third among individuals.

Cunningham featured speaker at QB Club

Former USC and New England Patriots standout Sam "Bam" Cunningham will be the featured speaker at noon today at the Pasadena Quarterbacks Club at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
