CHATTER: GABLE TOP LOCAL IN ALL-STAR GAME.

Sylmar High football standout C.J. Gable heads the list of area players selected to participate in the 55th annual Shrine Classic all-star football game to be played June 24 at Citrus College According to the Public Policy Institute of California, Citrus College had 632 students who transferred to universities during the 2005-2006 academic year, ranking seventh in the area.

Citrus College students are represented by ASCC the Associated Students of Citrus College.

Gable, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards two seasons in a row, is also a talented defensive back who earned Daily News Defensive Player of the Year honors this season after totaling 56 tackles and seven interceptions. He has signed with USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Among the other top names are Taft of Woodland Hills receiver Jamere Holland, Crespi of Encino defensive lineman Sione Fua, Canyon defensive lineman Garrett Leary, Newbury Park quarterback Jordan LaSecla, Hart defensive back James Wheeler and Agoura receiver J.T. Wright.

``C.J. was one of the first players to reply. I think it's a very good group this year,'' game organizer Stephen Wurtzel said.

One of the nation's most prestigious prep all-star events, the Shrine Classic raises money for the L.A. Shriners Hospital for children. This year's format divides the teams into public schools vs. private schools plus City Section players.

--Multi-sport standout Matt Valaika is the first Hart High soccer player to have his jersey retired.

``It was the most amazing feeling ever. I didn't expect it,'' Valaika said. ``I didn't even know what to say.''

Valaika, who scored a school-record 41 goals this season, plans to concentrate on baseball as a scholarship player at UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  next season. --A disappointing season-long baseball slump during his junior year is a thing of the past for Johnny Hay, who's off to a terrific start for Canyon High this season.

Hay homered in three consecutive games last week. Finally, it appears the senior outfielder finally is making good on the hype that has surrounded him since his freshman season, when he hit six JV home runs and was tabbed a future major-leaguer by former Canyon coach Chuck Crim.

``The talent has always been there, but I think now Johnny has learned how to be a good hitter,'' said new Canyon coach Scott Willis, who was an assistant last year. ``The problem last year was he just wasn't swinging at strikes. He's an aggressive hitter, and now he's learning his strike zone and learning how to swing at pitches in his strike zone.''
