CHATTER: FORMER MATER DEI COACH TAKES JOB AT THOUSAND OAKS.

Mary Houser was named the girls' basketball coach at Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  on Thursday.

Houser is a proven winner, with a state championship to her credit when she coached at Mater Dei of Santa Ana in 1996.

``She was clearly our first choice and we're very excited to have her,'' Thousand Oaks athletic director Athol Wong said. ``Her general demeanor leads me to think that she is going to be a really effective teacher of our girl athletes. It was wonderful to put such a highly qualified female in a coaching position as a role model for our girls.''

Houser replaces longtime coach Chuck Brown, who retired after last season. Thousand Oaks made the Southern Section Div. I-A playoffs this season but lost to Lancaster in the wild-card round. ...

Area wrestling was represented well at the National High School Senior Wrestling Championships in Cleveland over the weekend.

Chris Gonzalez from Alemany of Mission Hills, Shawn Riggs of Thousand Oaks and Daniel Valencia of Camarillo each came away with at least one victory against the top prep wrestlers in the country.

Valencia, who became the fourth wrestler in region history to finish in the top two in state, won two matches before being eliminated in double overtime at 112 pounds.

``The competition was definitely the best I've seen,'' Valencia said. ``All the guys just had way more technique. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
