--Highland of Palmdale graduate Matt Parris was named the Golden Baseball League's California Division Pitcher of the Week after throwing a five-hit shutout with no walks last week for the Long Beach Armada. The victory over the Japan Samurai was the right-hander's first complete game of the season. Parris (4-3), a huge Dodgers fan, got a boost before the outing with a pregame visit from Tommy Lasorda.

``That was awesome,'' Parris said. ``It was like a Catholic person meeting the pope.''

Parris, a sixth-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2000, is hoping for another positive experience this weekend when the Armada is among four teams in the independent league's playoffs at Blair Field in Long Beach. The three-day tournament begins Friday with top-seeded San Diego facing Chico at 3 p.m., followed by Long Beach against Mesa at 7 p.m.

Several locals are participating in the postseason.

Parris is joined on the Armada by outfielders Travis McAndrews and Kevin Miller of USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , and third baseman Randall Shelley from UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
