 High of Granada Hills athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Joshua Kendrick showed up at a meeting last November for students in grades eight through 11 holding a big black bag, they had to be wondering what Kendrick was carrying with him.

Turns out it was a glimpse into the Eagles' sports future.

First, Kendrick pulled out a football helmet with the school logo on it. Then came the football uniform with school colors.

It meant only one thing: Hillcrest Christian would be playing football this season.

``The whole place erupted,'' Kendrick said.

Four months later, the Eagles are well on their way. Kendrick will decide next week on who will coach the team, a full 10-week game schedule is nearly complete, and the school will soon decide on a home playing site.

``It's really coming together quite nicely,'' Kendrick said.

Hillcrest will play next season in the Heritage League. The plan is to start as an eight-man team, then move to 11-man within the next few years.

``We want to get our feet wet in eight-man football Eight-man football is a type of American football, generally played by small high schools. Rules and formations vary greatly among states and even among different organizations, but the one constant is eight players from each team on the field at one time, as opposed to eleven-man , then evaluate where we're at a year or two later,'' Kendrick said. ``Sometimes schools get a little too aggressive and go straight to 11-man, and it ends up setting the program back a little bit. We want to take things slow and grow at the appropriate pace.''

Kendrick said a quality group of athletes at the school should ensure instant success for the team. They'll find out quickly: Spring practice begins May 20. ...

With the boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  playoffs fast approaching, area teams are gearing up by scheduling as many quality teams as they can find for nonleague games.

And for most, that means finding good tournaments.

For City Section teams, the 14th annual Sylmar tournament Saturday is a good fit.

The 24-team tournament features some of the section's top teams - including Taft of Woodland Hills, Venice, San Pedro and Sylmar - plus top Southern Section teams.

``For us, it's a chance to prepare for the playoffs and see some of the teams we might have to play,'' Sylmar assistant coach Soheil Mashhoud said.

Pool play begins at 8 a.m. at Sylmar and Chatsworth. The playoffs will be at Sylmar later in the afternoon, with the championship match scheduled for 6 p.m. ...

They had considered College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .
