CHATTER: FLINTRIDGE PREP GIRLS' GOLFERS CASH IN ON GOOD GRADES.

They haven't played a round this year for Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge's boys' golf team, but the Rebels' five girls have been recognized by the Southern Section and the Women's Southern California Golf Association for their performance in the classroom.

Sophomores Allison Berger, Gina Chang, Melody Chu and Jill Tahara, and freshman Sally Suzuki were awarded a $250 grant from the WSCGA for posting a team grade-point average of 3.633.

Louisville of Woodland Hills (3.773) received $500.

``We call them our developmental squad,'' Flintridge Prep coach Bob Loughrie said. ``They've never missed a practice, and they're always out there working with me or one of our assistants to get better. And they're doing a great job in the classroom as well. It's just a great group of girls.''

--Burbank High's baseball team has a deaf catcher, R.J. Motts, who receives assistance from a sign-language interpreter while visiting the pitcher during games.

--A group of 11- and 12-year-old girls from Mason Recreation Center in Chatsworth won the L.A. City Recreation and Parks All-Star Tournament (basketball), routing Bogdanovich Recreation Center of San Pedro 45-17 in the final.

Mason, coached by Stacey Nowak and David Hannig, won five games in the Valley Division to reach the L.A. final four. Its toughest victory was in the Valley final, a 44-40 overtime triumph over Stonehurst Recreation Center of Sun Valley.

Mason beat Pan Pacific Recreation Center of Los Angeles 43-27 in the L.A. City semifinal. The team averaged 46.6 points per game and gave up only 23.4 per game.

The Mason All-Stars: Alex ``Al'' Inouye, Whitney Lam, Kimmy Scammam, Kelly Schneider, Alex Taylor, Jackie Urenda, Victoria Wells and Nicole Winters. Justin Wells was the scorekeeper.

College of the Canyons baseball player Mike Scripture and football standout Travis Gibb have committed to four-year colleges.

Scripture, a catcher who played at Valencia and Saugus, is headed to first-year NAIA program Cal State San Marcos. He'll join former Canyons teammate Mike Alvarado (Hart), who committed after taking a year off from baseball. Gibb, a tight end, signed with Division II Humboldt State.

ANDREW LAMBO

Junior, Newbury Park

Lambo pitched an eight-hitter, struck out eight and homered in an 8-1 victory over Calabasas that clinched a share of the Marmonte League baseball title. He hit two home runs in an 8-7, eight-inning loss to Thousand Oaks, his 11th and 12th of the season, to set a school record. Lambo is 7-1 with a 1.49 earned-run average and is hitting .370 with 25 runs batted in.

ANNIE STEFANEC

Sophomore, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks

Stefanec recorded the area's best time in the 100-yard freestyle (52.77 seconds) and the second-fastest mark in the 100 backstroke (59.66) Thursday against Mission League swimming champion Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. She also anchored the Knights' victorious 400 free-relay team (3:52.19).

ANDREW SANDLER

Simi Valley

The freshman, a right-handed pitcher who also plays catcher, has two victories and is hitting better than .300 for the Pioneers' baseball team. Sandler homered and struck out eight in a relief appearance Friday against Royal of Simi Valley. In his best performance, he had four hits against Thousand Oaks.
