CHATTER: DEPTH IN TALENT TEMPERS CAMPBELL HALL'S LOSSES.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Some bad luck for the Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:
  • a residence hall at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
of Studio City boys' basketball team could wind up being a fortunate set of circumstances.

Campbell Hall, one of the top teams in the area, lost three-year starters Joe Ford, Sam Handler A software routine that performs a particular task. It often refers to a routine that "handles" an exception of some kind, such as an error, but it can refer to mainstream processes as well. The term is typically used in operating systems and other system software.  and Steven Tolbert to ankle sprains ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  just before the start of the season this week. At the time, Campbell Hall simply hoped it could hold on until they returned in two or three weeks.

The Vikings have more than held on. They have won their first two games in impressive fashion and showcased a talent-rich lineup that goes 12 players deep.

``Obviously you don't want to lose three players who have started for you for three years,'' Campbell Hall coach Terry Kelly said. ``But in this case, there has definitely been a bad side and a good side.''

The most prominent part of the good side is outstanding freshman Jrue Holiday, who has taken advantage of extended playing time to flash the ability that makes him one of the top freshmen around.

Under regular circumstances, the 6-foot-3 Holiday would back up Ford, who will play next year at Pacific University. But now that he's getting most of the minutes, Holiday is flourishing.

``We have to figure out a way to get this guy on the floor (when everybody is healthy),'' Kelly said. ``He's just a special, special player.''

Handler is expected to return sometime next week, and Ford and Tolbert are targeted to return Dec. 13.

``We want all of them back as quickly as possible, but we're going to be extremely cautious,'' Kelly said. ``We don't want to be in a situation where they suffer a tweak To make minor adjustments in an electronic system or in a software program in order to improve performance. See calibrate.

Speaking of talented freshman - and there are many - Montclair Prep of Panorama City forward Jin Su Kim might be the best of all. Kim, an exchange student from South Korea, made a memorable debut Tuesday with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in his first high school game, against Hillcrest Christian of Granada Hills.

Portis originally thought that would play for Utah. He committed to the Utes last month, only to watch Utah coach Urban Meyer Urban F. As a result, Portis is exploring other options.

He'll kick-start the recruiting process again this weekend with a visit to Kansas State, followed by a trip to Maryland next weekend.

Portis will have one visit remaining after the Maryland trip, although he has not decided where that will be. But this much he does know: He is looking forward to his visit to Kansas State.

``They run a spread offense, which I think I'd fit in to really well,'' Portis said. ``I'm looking forward to the next two weeks, just to see what those schools have to offer.''

Portis does not expect to commit to either school during his visits.

``But you never know,'' he said. ...
