CHATTER: DEFENDING WEST VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMP BIRMINGHAM ADDS QB.

The Taft High of Woodland Hills football team might be favored to win the West Valley League and City titles next season, but Birmingham of Van Nuys isn't letting its reign slip quietly away after two years.

The Patriots landed a much-needed quarterback in Garrett Feig, who transferred from Crespi of Encino. Whether Feig will be as good as Scott Jensen was the past two years remains to be seen, but at least coach Ed Croson has a quarterback.

``I haven't seem him play,'' Croson said. ``But he's been in our weightlifting class and he works hard. ... My experience is, with L.A. City schools, kids come and kids go. You never know until you get into summer.'' ...

Defensive back Adam Verdugo of Crespi signed to play with Holy Cross. ...
