CHATTER: CSUN LANDS BRIGNAC.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

Taft running back Marquis Brignac signed with Cal State Northridge on Monday, further solidifying a strong recruiting class for Matadors coach Ron Ponciano and his staff.

Brignac, whom the Daily News named to its All-Area team, led Taft to a 12-2 record and the City Section championship this past season with 1,884 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Gilbert Arenas of Grant High was named to the West team for the third annual Dada All-Star Classic (formerly the Eddie Jones All-Star Classic) at Pauley Pavilion on April 18.

The game features a number of the top players in the country. The West team, which boasts Arenas (committed to Arizona), El Cerrito's Andrew Gooden (Kansas) and Compton's Tito Maddox (considering UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

) will play against a team made up of players from elsewhere, including UCLA recruit Kareem Rush from Kansas City and Oak Hill Academy's Travis Watson (Virginia).

Arenas said he doesn't have any special moves planned for the game, but figure on him taking advantage if he gets a chance in the open court.

``I'm just going to play my game and have some fun,'' Arenas said. . . .

Stanford's softball team already has a decidedly local flavor, boasting Jessica Mendoza from Camarillo, Shane Anderson (La Reina), Christina Chao (Hart) and Romona Shelburne from El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

. Chaminade pitcher Maureen LeCocq will add to that list next year when she joins the Cardinal.

All but Chao are alumni of the San Fernando Valley-based Stealth travel team program, which was rated the third-best travel program to scout by college coaches. Eight players from last year's Stealth 18-A team have received college scholarships for next year, including LeCocq, Cara Blumfield (Boston College), Cindy Muran (Northwestern) and Traci Hall (Santa Clara.)
