CHATTER: CSUN CANCELS PASSING TOURNEY.

One additional fallout from the mess at Cal State Northridge: The annual high school passing tournament has been canceled.

This weekend, 32 teams, including Hart, Westlake, Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Assistant Foster Andersen said no one wanted to host a second-rate tournament.

St. Francis stands to be one of the losers of the Northridge cancellation. The Knights recently won the Whittier College tournament, but coach Bill Redell said it wasn't very strong. This would have been a prime spot to see quarterback John Sciarra square off against the likes of Westlake's Zac Wasserman or Hart's Kyle Matter. Also, Redell is excited about twin receiver/defensive backs Mark and Kenny Garcia and tight-end brothers Tyler and Nathan Terrazone.

There's still the Cal Lutheran tournament next weekend. . . .

Brian Edick, a Hart sophomore-to-be, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur golf tournament. He shot 71-76-147 over 36 holes at Ft. Washington Country Club in Fresno on Monday and finished tied for first. The top three qualified. The USJA USJA United States Judo Association  is July 27-31 at the Country Club of York, Penn. . . .

Sun Valley's Andrey Chua, 12, won the North American Challenge Skate The North American Challenge Skate was a series of annual summer figure skating competitions for American and Canadian figure skaters on the novice and junior levels. It was a developmental program rather than an elite competition series; the purpose of the program was to give  Series title last weekend in Dallas. Chua was second in the short program and won with a flawless long performance that included a triple lutz. . . .

Palmdale gymnast Jamie Dantzscher is on the U.S. team that will compete in the upcoming Pan American Games Pan American (Sports) Games

Quadrennial sports festival. The games, conceived in 1940 as an event for the nations of the Western Hemisphere, were first held in 1951.
 July 24-27 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Women's athletics competition. Contestants take part in seven different track-and-field events: 100-m hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump, javelin throw, and 200- and 800-m runs.

UCLA volleyball player Jennifer Wittenburg will transfer to U. of Houston in her hometown. . . .

Paraclete graduate Jason Brown is in Mexico City playing for the U.S. in the Maccabi/Pan Am Games. Brown is pitching and playing third base.

Also playing are Malibu resident Marisa Albert in junior tennis; Sherman Oaks' Laurence Rosenthal and Daniel Zucker of Toluca Lake compete in softball. . . .

A Toluca Lake PONY baseball team of 10-year-olds has advanced to the U.S. Specialty Sports Association World Series in Dallas that begins Sunday.

The local members: Rene Ascencio of Van Nuys, Burbank's Jesse Ayala, Jeff Bradshaw, Chris Jackson and Andrew Rodriguez; Michael Cambianica of Glendale, Valley Village's Nick Carbone, and Carlos Melara and Jesse Orozo of North Hollywood. . . .

Viewpoint High is holding two flag-football camps. The first one-week session is Aug. 2-6. from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for boys and girls boys and girls
