CHATTER: COMMUNITY GRIEVES LOSS OF BELL, SMITH.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

The Saugus community is tight-knit. It seems everyone can be linked with teen-agers Robert Smith Robert Smith, Bob Smith or Bobby Smith may refer to:

Business
  • Robert Barr Smith (1824–1915), Australian businessman and philanthropist
  • Robert H.
and Sheldon Bell, who died in a one-car accident early Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:
  • "Sunday Morning (radio program)", a Canadian radio program formerly aired on CBC Radio One
  • CBS News Sunday Morning, a television news program on CBS in the United States
  • Sunday Morning (TBS TV series)
.

Even girls' volleyball coach Bobbie Estes only needs two steps to link with Bell. Her son Kevin plays freshman basketball and knew Bell, who with Smith played on the varsity. One of her students in her first-period 10th-grade modern-civilization class is Ryan Davis, a football player whose family took in Bell when he transferred from Lancaster.

``There's a lot of crying going on,'' Estes said, ``and it's not just girls. ... The mood (on campus) is incredibly somber. It's just a hard time. They don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

 what to do, the kids.''

One thing was for certain: This was no time to take final exams for many. Monday was to be the start, but the school gave the students the option of delaying taking them if they were too grief-stricken.

Smith and Bell, both 17, died after the Ford Bronco The Ford Bronco was a SUV produced from 1966 through 1996, with five distinct generations.

It was initially introduced as a competitor for the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout.
Smith was driving crashed into a retaining wall about a block from Saugus High. Sheriff's deputies said Smith was driving the car at speeds exceeding 100 mph without a license.

Smith's love of speed wasn't lost on football coach Ron Hilton. ``He had an exuberance for life,'' Hilton said. ``He played everything everything to the fullest.''

Boys' basketball coach Jeff Hallman felt the same way about Smith as Hilton. He remembered asking Smith how he was doing and Smith replied: ``Every day's a good day for Robert Smith.''

Hallman canceled practice Monday and invited his players to join him on a ``Chucky Run.'' Hallman enjoys running and nicknamed Bell ``Chucky'' because he found Bell to resemble Charles Barkley This article is about the basketball player. For the politican, see Charles E. Barkley

Estes observed her 52nd birthday Monday. She deliberately didn't use the word ``celebrate.''

``My brother-in-law died on my 17th birthday,'' she said. ``My grandfather was buried on my 19th birthday. I've had pneumonia on my birthday. It's not a good day.'' ...

Brockert was 5-0 during the two-day tournament, raising his record to 21-6 with 20 pins.

``I like being in that position a lot. It feels great and I'm really happy,'' Brockert said. ``I'd rather be the one to win or lose it instead of having the whole match in someone else's hands. If that was the case, there wouldn't be anything I could do about it.''

SAMMY SAMMY Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year  ZUCKERMAN

Senior

Notre Dame water polo

Maybe it's because she doesn't play for a traditional water polo power, or maybe it's because she doesn't play for a club team, but colleges ought to take notice of this 2-meter player. So far, only Division I UC Santa Barbara and Division III Occidental have shown interest. Maybe that will chance now that she scored 34 goals in seven matches last week, often being double-teamed. Her production was the single-largest reason the Knights finished 10th of 32 teams at the Western tournament.

``She is extremely quick and strong and just a gamer,'' coach John Hirn said. ``She refuses to give in. She was doubled all game by Redondo and she still scored five goals.''

UP AND COMER

SEAN n. 1. A seine. See Seine.  NORTON

Hart High

Before this season, Norton was a basketball player through and through. He plays for the Indians, but now he has discovered football and will compete for the varsity starting quarterback job after throwing for 1,811 yards and 29 touchdowns against just one interception for the junior varsity last season.

HEAD TO HEAD

Matchup of the week:

LOUIS DARBY

Sylmar forward

SERGI LEPIASHINSKI

Reseda forward

Darby is one half of the Spartans' powerful one-two punch, along with high-scoring forward Frank Robinson. He isn't as flashy as Robinson, but he's a terrific scorer and defender and he plays with tremendous intensity and emotion. When there's a loose ball, especially at a critical stage of the game, Darby will do what it takes to get it. Offensively, he's effective outside and is extremely crafty around the basket.

Lepiashinski is a powerful 6-4 forward who can score from anywhere on the court, using a nice jumper to go with drives to the basket in which he uses his strength to overpower o·ver·pow·er

opponents. Lepiashinski has also improved his defense and rebounding, making him an all-around performer. He'll need both of those skills against Darby, who is relentless on the boards and gets many points on second effort and tenacity.

Friday, 7 p.m., at Reseda High.
