CHATTER: COC GETS OFFENSIVE, NABS HERRINGTON.

Since College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  reinstituted its football program in 1998, Chuck Lyon has run the offense.

Truth be told, he always wanted Dean Herrington to do it. Finally, he has his man, but it took time, luck and Lyon's pleading to bring Herrington from Hart High of Newhall by way of Occidental College History
The Birth of Occidental College
Occidental College (commonly referred to as Oxy) was founded on April 20, 1887, by a group of Presbyterian clergy and laymen.

``It's been a running joke,'' Lyon said. ``When I got hired, I called Dean and said, `Why don't you come over and run the offense?' After every year, I'd make that call.''

Herrington, whose run-and-shoot offense helped Hart win five Southern Section titles, including the last four in Division III

Lyon called Herrington and told him, ``OK, buddy, we got a full-time job for you.''

Herrington applied, and Lyon was on the search committee. Lyon kept his mouth shut, telling people he knew Herrington but nothing else. He wanted the best candidate, even if that wasn't his first choice.

Fortunately for him, his first choice was everyone's. Herrington went through two interviews before being offered the job of assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. He not only will bring his offense to the Cougars, he will help bring football players to COC See chip on chip.  and help place players at four-year schools. ...

Beginning next year, Southern Section sports that don't have a state-championship tournament will be grouped in divisions based on strength of league. The Southern Section Council approved the switch from enrollment-based divisions for football, boys' and girls' soccer, baseball, softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' , boys' and girls' golf and boys' volleyball. Cross country, track, basketball and girls' volleyball will continue in enrollment-based divisions.
