ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

LUKE LAOLAGI

Senior

Birmingham of Lake Balboa

With Birmingham up 13 points early on Hart of Newhall, most figured the Indians would come back. After all, they never had lost to a City Section team in coach Mike Herrington's 16-year tenure. Hart started its familiar drive downfield down·field

LINDSAY FLETCHER

Senior

Flintridge Prep of La Canada

The Flintridge Prep girls' volleyball team hadn't beaten Prep League rival Pasadena Poly since Fletcher's freshman year, but the talented outside hitter made sure that streak stopped Friday. Fletcher had 26 kills to lead the Rebels to a four-game victory to keep them in a first-place tie with Chadwick of Rancho Palos Verdes Rancho Pal·os Ver·des

UP AND COMER

JULIO TELLEZ

Freshman

Birmingham of Lake Balboa

Just the third freshman Birmingham cross country coach Scott King has called up to run at the varsity level in his 31 years as coach, Tellez finished in 16 minutes, 40 seconds at a recent meet in Griffith Park - a finish good enough for fifth in the Patriots' lineup.

``He's going to really make the difference on how we do in City,'' King said. ``If he can move up he'll mean a lot for us.''

Tellez did not train with the team over the summer so he was a complete surprise when school started. He is a welcome addition, even if King isn't sure where he came from.

``I have no idea,'' King said. ``At this point I really don't care.''
