He's too busy trying to rebuild the program after it was terminated because of budget cuts.

The first order of business will be to rejoin the Western State Conference and secure the use of El Cariso Park for baseball and softball, which will return in spring 2003. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

      JYNNIFER WRIGHT

      Senior

      Desert Christian cross country

Wright won the first High Desert Mountain League race Saturday in Mammoth to remain unbeaten in league during her career. The previous week, the three-time defending league champion won the Division V race of the Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park to help the Knights win the team title for the third consecutive year.

Desert Christian of Lancaster was among the top four in the state Division V championships the last three years behind Wright, who was eighth as a freshman in 1998 and 10th in 1999. She was 11th last year despite being sidelined by hernia surgery during the season.

      BRENDAN EVERMAN

      Senior,

      Notre Dame water polo

The four-year varsity starter set the school single-game scoring record with 12 goals in a 14-3 victory Wednesday over Alemany of Mission Hills. He also made seven steals and had an assist in the Mission League opener.

Everman had 26 goals, 30 steals and 12 assists in six games - four victories - last week, including a 2-2 showing at the South Bay tournament, where coach John Hirn said: ``He was responsible for 75 percent of our scoring. And he did everything else, too.''

Everman leads the Knights (5-4) of Sherman Oaks in goals (36) and steals (34) and is tied for the lead with 18 assists.

Water polo isn't even Everman's top sport. Colleges are recruiting him as a swimmer in the backstroke and the individual medley.

      HEAD TO HEAD

      Matchup of the week:

      STEVE SMITH

      Taft

      Wide receiver

      DENNIS KEYES

      Birmingham

      Defensive back

Smith, a smooth, athletic, explosive 6-3, 190-pound athlete, came into the season as the region's top junior. He's done nothing to diminish those credentials, catching 27 passes for 582 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the Toreadors of Woodland Hills to a 3-1 record heading into Friday's crucial West Valley League matchup with Birmingham of Van Nuys. Smith is proving his worth on defense, too, having picked off seven passes. But it's on offense where he is most dangerous and the Patriots must slow him. Keyes, a 6-1, 190-pound junior, has size and athletic ability. He's big enough to body up on Smith if the Patriots decide to play man coverage, and if they use zone, Keyes will help on double-teams. The key will be his ability to play physical, and if he can jar Smith with a couple of big hits, he might be able to throw him off his game. Keyes also is an excellent running back, gaining 423 yards and eight touchdowns on 39 carries.

Friday, 7 p.m. at Taft High.

      ON DECK:

      This week's must see:

      Birmingham at Taft football

Last year, Taft came in heavily favored and was humbled 41-14. This year, Birmingham is favored, though not as heavily. The Patriots' offense is strong with quarterback Scott Jensen and running back Kevin McCleary. But the Patriots defense is suspect and Taft quarterback Cary Dove has a 400-yard game this season. Plus, Taft's Steve Smith is as dangerous a two-way player as they come. Get there early or there won't be a seat.
