The girls' soccer team at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City is no stranger to competing against the elite teams in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Before they went on their Christmas break, the Wolverines were excited about facing two of the best high school teams in Arizona, Desert Vista of Phoenix today and Horizon of Scottsdale on Saturday.

Unfortunately for Harvard-Westlake, its travel plans were canceled at the 11th hour.

Harvard-Westlake coach Stacy Schwartz learned late last week that Horizon backed out of its contract leaving a less-desirable flight to play just one game.

``At the last minute, Horizon reneged on their commitment to play us,'' said Schwartz, whose team, as a result of the cancellation, is only scheduled to play 17 regular-season games, three short of the maximum allotted al·lot

Pierce College wide receiver Daniel Smith has signed a letter of intent to play for Idaho next season, according to Pierce coach David Banuelos.

Tom Harp and Daryl Stroh shared the football coaching duties at Granada Hills for most of the past 19 years.

Together, they won a City championship in 1987 and made Granada Hills a perennial contender in the West Valley League. Apart, it never seemed to last.

Harp resigned as coach this week, a year after Stroh retired. He will remain at the school as boys' volleyball coach and physical education teacher.

``I've been doing two sports for 23 years,'' Harp said. ``I need a break. It will be good to have a fall off.''
