CHATTER: CAUTIOUS CANYONS TOPS NATION.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Everything about Tuesday was routine for the players and coaches on the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football team - the morning classes, the weight room workout, the film session, the afternoon practice - but with one tremendous exception.

For the first time in school history, the Cougars went through their day as the nation's top-ranked community college team.

After defeating Mission Conference powers Pasadena and Palomar to open the season, Canyons leapfrogged Coffeyville (Kan.) to move into the top spot in the weekly JC GridWire rankings.

``It's pretty cool,'' sophomore quarterback Jason Beck said, ``but it doesn't mean anything. We're only 2-0. It's how you end up at the end of the year.''

Added sophomore wide receiver Trevor Brackett: ``Come to us in 13 or 14 weeks. Hopefully, we'll be blessed enough to be ranked No. 1 in the country then, and I can say all the things I want to.''

Canyons coach Chuck Lyon did not even inform his team of the news, lest it become a distraction before Saturday's game against Pierce. But it marked another milestone for the college, which reinstated its football program in 1998 and was last year's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  champion.

In addition, the Cougars became the first Southern California team in at least five years to be ranked No. 1 during the season. The news was tempered, however, by Lyon's discovery during the day that Canyons would not be eligible for the top seed in this year's new eight-team Southern California regional playoffs even if the Cougars finish 10-0 during the regular season.

The top seed in the playoffs will go to the team from the conference with the best winning percentage in the season-opening crossover Crossover

games, which were completed last week. Canyons is a member of the Western State Conference, which was the worst of the three conferences with a 9-18 record.

It means Canyons could be seeded lower than Palomar or Pasadena come November. The best the Cougars can hope for is a No. 3 seed in the playoffs, and they could play on the road for the semifinals and finals.

``That's the way I read it,'' Lyon said. ``Can you believe that?'' ...
