CHATTER: CAR ACCIDENT TURNED INTO GOOD THING.

A minor car accident a few months ago led to unexpected benefits for the senior goalkeeper of the Agoura High boys' water polo team. Acevedo wasn't seriously injured in the collision but did seek a chiropractor chiropractor

Schroeder invited Acevedo to join the Waves in summer workouts, which gave Acevedo additional playing time and exposure to a higher level of play.

``That was great,'' Acevedo said. ``It helped me a lot. I got a lot of extra experience in.''

The unusual experience gave Acevedo a glimpse at what it would take to play for the Waves - one program he's considering for his college career - and inspired him to step up his summer training.

He ran the bleachers so often he had to tape his ankles at the beginning of the season because he said they remained sore.

Acevedo's work paid off. He has helped Agoura build a 19-4 record and No. 4 ranking in Southern Section Division IV.

STATILICIOUS

It's said that defense wins football games, but of the four schools that held opposing quarterbacks to fewer than 10 yards passing Friday night, only two were winners.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

JESSE AINSWORTH Jesse Ainsworth is an American football placekicker. College Career

Senior

Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.

Ainsworth had a game most kickers only dream about Friday against Royal of Simi Valley, booming long field goals of 55 and 56 yards - both school records - and a 41-yarder in the Lancers' 30-7 victory. Ainsworth is a kicking rarity, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder who is also the Lancers' best defensive lineman. But it's kicking that earned him a full-ride scholarship to Arizona State, and it's kicking that has amazed Thousand Oaks fans all year. Especially Friday.

ERICA O'CONNOR

Senior

La Reina

The La Reina of Thousand Oaks girls' volleyball team clinched its 11th consecutive Tri-Valley League championship last week thanks to the outstanding play of O'Connor. O'Connor had 23 kills against St. Bonaventure of Ventura and 12 kills against Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara two days later. For the week, O'Connor was 32-of-33 passing and had 27 digs. For the season, O'Connor has 192 kills and a .356 hitting percentage for a balanced La Reina team.

Bonet is a sophomore standout at outside hitter on the talented Verdugo Hills of Tujunga junior varsity girls' volleyball team. The Dons' varsity has established itself as a rising power in the City Section, and Bonet seems a sure bet to join that group next season. ``Our JV team is so strong,'' she said, ``that people see them and our varsity and it's like, `Which one is which?' ''

HEAD 2 HEAD

COREY MAZZA

Thousand Oaks

Defensive back

ERIK VOSE

Westlake

Quarterback

The Westlake-Thousand Oaks rivalry is as intense as it gets in the Marmonte League. This year's game will come down to Westlake's passing against Thousand Oaks' pass defense. Vose has enjoyed a solid year at quarterback, throwing for 1,372 yards and 13 touchdowns. He had two touchdowns and 183 yards on 7-of-12 passing as Westlake (6-2, 5-0) defeated Simi Valley 21-7 on Friday. Vose leads a talented defensive backfield that includes Adam Marsh, who has four interceptions. Mazza is a physical force and intimidates opposing receivers with his hitting ability. He must be on top of his game Friday, creating havoc and turnovers, to give the Lancers' offense a chance.

THEN AND NOW

Agoura quarterback Dustin Croick (1,992 yards, 21 touchdowns) has always wanted to follow former Agoura star Ryan McCann's lead and play at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, although Croick hopes to have better luck once he gets there.

McCann had a phenomenal junior season for Agoura in 1996, passing for 2,128 yards and 24 touchdowns, and was a preseason All-American going into his senior year. As a redshirt sophomore at UCLA in 2000, he came off the bench to relieve an injured Cory Paus and led the Bruins to a stunning 28-24 victory over then-No. 3 Alabama in the season opener. Two weeks later, he brought UCLA back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to defeat then-No. 3 Michigan 23-20. The Bruins were rolling and McCann was at his best. And then it all came crashing down as McCann tore the labrum labrum /la·brum/ (la´brum) pl. la´bra   [L.] an edge, rim, or lip.

After a 2001 season in which he saw limited action as the third-string quarterback behind Cory Paus and Scott McEwan, McCann transferred to Division 1-AA Tennessee Chattanooga for his senior year. He earned the starting job outright before the season, but five interceptions in his first two games landed McCann in a platoon with former UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, Temps Universel Coordonné) The international time standard (formerly Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT). Two weeks ago, in a 45-28 loss to Western Carolina, McCann passed for a career-high 375 yards.
