CHATTER: CANYON'S `83 TEAM PLANS TO REUNITE.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer Canyon High's undefeated football team should provide one the area's best chances for a Southern Section title this season. As a reminder that such an accomplishment is possible, former Canyon champions will reunite. Canyon is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first Southern Section championship. Tony Moore, who was captain of the 1983 team, is helping organize a reunion for the Nov. 7 homecoming game. Former players are asked to call Moore at (661) 284-6126. ... The Cal Lutheran football team's 62-35 upset of Pomona Pitzer on Saturday set a school record for points in a game, surpassing the mark of 60 set in 1969. Senior quarterback Casey Preston threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. Cal Lutheran had nine touchdowns. But the most versatile scorer was senior receiver Jimmy Fox. Thanks to Ulmer, who had nine kills and 14 digs, Valencia was able to handle their rivals 15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 Thursday in a key league match. The victory gives Valencia a one-game lead over Hart in the league standings. Sean Coen Senior Canyon Coen came up big against Valencia in Canyon's biggest football game of the year - at least until it plays Hart of Newhall. Coen had a career-high 13 catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns. He also had an interception in the Cowboys' 52-45 victory over the Vikings. The victory sets up Thursday's Foothill League showdown with Hart. UP AND COMER Jonathan Bent Granada Hills The 5-foot-10 freshman uses strength to make up for a lack of size as a standout on the Granada Hills High freshman basketball team. Through six games, Bent averaged 17.2 points, 22 rebounds and 5.2 assists for a team going for a fourth consecutive league title. Among his biggest performances was an Oct. 13 game in which he had 30 points and 27 rebounds.
