CHATTER: BUS DRIVER STRIKE PUTS GAMES ON HOLD.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

The Birmingham High of Van Nuys softball team was eagerly awaiting its West Valley League opener Tuesday against Cleveland of Reseda. The opening of league play is always a special occasion, and with the Patriots showing signs of being one of the top teams in the City Section, they were looking forward to getting started.

Well, they'll have to wait a little longer - as will most spring-sports teams within the L.A. Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. .

A strike by bus drivers from Laidlaw, the company that provides transportation for the section, caused cancellations of most sporting events for Tuesday and today. The only sport not affected is golf, but everything else - volleyball, swimming, baseball, softball and tennis - was shut down.

Understandably, the decision by the district to cancel games was met with disappointment by the people affected most - the athletes.

``The girls were clearly upset when they found out they weren't playing (Tuesday)'' Birmingham coach Jim Rose Jim Rose may refer to a number of persons:

said. ``This was something they were really geared up for, and to find out on the day of the game they won't be playing, well, of course they were disappointed.''

The section has set aside make-up dates for all canceled games, most coming at the end of the month. Still, that did nothing to soothe hurt feelings, especially considering the Patriots and everyone else had to return to practice Tuesday rather then play in a game.

``That's the tough part, because you know as a coach you're probably not going to get 100-percent concentration,'' Rose said. ``And I can understand why. The girls would rather play than practice. Unfortunately, this was one of those things totally out of our hands.''

was not happy with the decision.

``It's brutal,'' said Fitzgerald, whose Dons were to play Canoga Park. ``The only good thing is a couple of our girls are banged up, so they can heal. We don't have a game Thursday either because Hollywood doesn't have a team this year, so I guess we have four days to prepare for Saturday's game against Chaminade in the Daily News tournament.'' ...
