STATILICIOUS

Of the four area teams remaining in the City Section football playoffs, Birmingham of Lake Balboa has gone the longest without winning a championship. The last time Birmingham won the title was in 1963.

Taft (City Division) and Chatsworth (Invitational) won titles in 1998 and Granada Hills last won the large division championship in 1987. Granada Hills is competing in the Invitational division this season.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CARY DOVE

Senior

Taft

A year ago Dove was a skinny junior, and many wondered whether he could handle the quarterback duties at Taft of Woodland Hills. Now he's one of the region's best players, a scholarship to California in hand and leading the Toreadors to another run at the City Championship. Dove got Taft off to a good start, completing 17 of 21 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-14 victory over Banning in the first round. Taft will play Dorsey in the second round Wednesday.

HALA HADAWAR

Senior

Van Nuys

Hadawar led the Wolves to their second consecutive City Section girls' volleyball championship with a three-game sweep of Taft of Woodland Hills on Friday. Hadawar provides steady leadership as well as hard hitting from the outside hitter position. She was the City Section co-player of the year last season and is likely to earn that honor by herself this month.

UP AND COMER

SHERRY WANG

Westlake

The Warriors have a strong tradition in girls' volleyball, and Wang, a freshman, is likely to help the school continue that legacy. Wang led the freshman team as an outside hitter and will be a candidate to make the jump to varsity next season and join the Marmonte League-champion Warriors.

HEAD 2 HEAD

Matchup of the week:

BRYAN HUSTON

Agoura

Defensive back

WHITNEY LEWIS Whitney Lewis (born August 13, 1985, in Corpus Christi, Texas and raised in Oxnard, California) is an American football wide receiver. He is entering his senior season at the University of Northern Iowa.

St. Bonaventure of Ventura

Wide receiver

Lewis is one of the best players in the country, and probably the most highly recruited wide receiver. He is physically imposing and possesses excellent speed and athletic ability. He has outstanding hands, but it's what he does after the catch that sets him apart and makes him such a difficult player to contain. Huston, a big, tough, physical safety, will need every bit of his size and strength to slow down Lewis. The key will be forcing St. Bonaventure to look elsewhere on pass plays with tough defense and double-teams, and punishing Lewis when he gets the ball to try to wear him down. No matter what Agoura does, Lewis usually makes an impact. The key is limiting it.

Friday at Agoura 7:30 p.m.

THEN AND NOW

In Hart of Newhall's pass-oriented offense, there aren't too many running backs that can make a name for themselves. But Mickey Mercado did as a 5-foot-8, 145-pound running back who was an integral part of Hart's past three Southern Section Division III
