Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Mustafa Asghari, who was removed from the Taft High of Woodland Hills basketball team last week, has enrolled at Birmingham of Van Nuys and is expected to play Friday.

Asghari, one of the region's top point guards, was averaging 26 points and nine assists when he was removed. Taft coach Derrick derrick: see crane.

Taylor said the decision to take him off the team was made because of philosophical differences.

Asghari, a senior, moved into Birmingham's boundary this week with his mother, enabling him to start playing with the Patriots immediately.

standout Joey Howard to play for the Junior B Valencia Flyers this week is pretty big stuff.

The Flyers compete in the Western States Hockey League and play at the Ice Station in Valencia.

``This kid is a very, very talented hockey player,'' Valencia general manager Larry Bruyere said.

Howard was playing with a Junior A hockey team in Topeka, Kan., this year after graduating from Saugus as the Foothill League's Most Valuable Player and leading scorer. He was having a solid year until Topeka put him on the disabled list after he suffered a back injury working out with the Flyers during Christmas break.

While Howard was rehabilitating, Topeka picked up two impact players from Canada and were contemplating trading Howard's rights to another Junior A team. But Howard, after consulting with his family, asked for his release so he could sign with the Flyers.

``We're delighted that he's here with us,'' Bruyere said.
