CHATTER: BAUER GETS SCHOLARSHIP TO WEBER STATE.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. quarterback Kyle Bauer has accepted a scholarship to play football at Division I-AA Weber State in Utah next season. Bauer, formerly of Valencia High, passed for a school-record 3,600 yards and 38 touchdowns this season as Canyons (10-2) won the Western State Conference title and finished as the state's runner-up. He was a first-team JC Gridwire All-American. ... Kiel McClung's father woke him and handed the Quartz Hill senior an envelope containing information that McClung had been named a youth All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The honor was like a dream come true for the UCLA-bound McClung. The same can't be said for what McClung and his teammates have endured on the field this season. Coming off a Southern Section Division I co-championship and having McClung back as the defending division Player of the Year, Quartz Hill entered the season ranked third in the nation by Student Sports, and aiming for a second consecutive undefeated season and possible national title. Those goals have been dashed as the Rebels find themselves struggling to stay near .500. Quartz Hill failed to advance out of pool play at the recent Student Sports Invitational in Florida, a prestigious national event where the Rebels had originally hoped to solidify their status as a national power. Quartz Hill did not reach the championship round at this past weekend's Marina tournament either. The slow start has dropped the Rebels out of the national top-50 rankings. The only local representative in the polls is St. Francis of La Canada at No. 15 in the West region.
