CHATTER: AREA TEAMS TO COMPETE IN WATTS GAMES 39TH EDITION OF NATION'S LARGEST YOUTH ATHLETIC COMPETITION KICKS OFF TODAY.

Although summer competition for area high schools began Friday with basketball and 7-on-7 football tournaments, the season's biggest event kicks off today at Home Depot The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services.

The 39th annual L.A. Watts Games, the largest high school athletic event in the nation with more than 12,000 participants, will play host to 54 area teams competing in 11 sports during the next two weekends.

Home Depot Center enters its third year as the host facility for the Watts Games, which, in 1985, surpassed the Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

Royal of Simi Valley's boys' volleyball team was the lone area group to win a Watts title in 2005, but the Highlanders are not scheduled to participate this year.

The marquee events for the next two weekends are the boys' and girls' basketball and boys' and girls' soccer competitions, with 35 combined local teams entered in the four tournaments.

The boys' basketball draw features three area teams -- Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:

 of LaCanada Flintridge, which finished third in the girls' soccer competition last year, leads a group of eight local entries, including Sylmar, Taft and Thousand Oaks.

Hoover of Glendale, third in the boys' soccer tournament last year, returns to the competition, along with Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The basketball and soccer tournaments will continue May17 and conclude with the championship games May 18.

Cleveland of Reseda and Sylmar are the only area teams competing in the 7-on-7 football tournament, held at Home Depot Center and Carson High.

The girls' volleyball tournament is a one-day competition that will determine a winner today at South Torrance High. City finalist Taft and area power Thousand Oaks are scheduled to compete. The one-day boys' volleyball tournament will take place May 17 at South Torrance.

Along with the Watts Games, another prestigious basketball tournament is being held today and Sunday at various sites throughout Southern California.

 Basketball Coaches Association is holding its annual summer classic, with the finals scheduled for Sunday at Arroyo of El Monte El Monte (ĕl mŏn`tē), city (1990 pop. 106,209), Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1912. A residential, industrial, and commercial city in the San Gabriel Valley, El Monte manufactures furniture, electronic equipment, semiconductors,  (girls) and Northwood of Irvine (boys).

Seven area boys' teams -- including Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, La Canada and Notre Dame -- began competition Friday at Hoover. Thousand Oaks and Calabasas lead a group of six area boys' teams at Valencia. The winners of both regionals advance to Sunday's quarterfinals at Northwood.

Hart of Newhall plays host to La Canada and three other teams in its girls' basketball regional, with the winner advancing to Sunday's semifinals at Arroyo.
