CHATTER: AREA TEAMS ALIVE AND WELL; DON'T SELL THEM SHORT.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

Hello, losers? No need to apply here. This is Winners Central; theme song: ``You Gotta got·ta
Informal
Contraction of got to: I gotta go home.
 Have Heart.''

Did you see how well our area teams fared in the playoffs? The vast majority won Friday and Saturday, including some upsets. This will teach those coaches who represent schools over the hill and who did the seeding that they really are over the hill when it comes to underestimating our area teams.

--Grant's girls' basketball team, seeded 12th, knocks off No. 5 Gardena? All those injuries to the likes of Alexis Weatherspoon and Krystal Clay only served to show how much heart the team has.

--Poly's boys' soccer team, seeded 29th, eliminates proverbial pro·ver·bi·al

Belmont coach Nancy Carr-Swain claimed the officiating was atrocious, but the bottom line was the Parrots played the game as it was called. She didn't have a problem with the goals, however.

--Louisville's girls' soccer team beat No. 3-seeded South Pasadena South Pasadena (păs'ədē`nə), city (1990 pop. 23,936), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1888. Medical supplies, clothing, and transportation and electronic equipment are manufactured. ? Actually, this wasn't an upset. Louisville is from the top league in Division IV. Chaminade is seeded second and Harvard-Westlake is fourth.

``I felt so sorry for (South Pasadena's) coach,'' Louisville coach Jose Perez said. ``They were seeded, so why do they have to play us?''

--Chaminade's boys' basketball team winn at Burroughs-Ridgecrest? OK, this isn't as big of an upset, but it shows the Eagles didn't care they were facing USC-bound Rory O'Neill. They also proved two players, Jordan O'Gilvie and Scott Borchart, are better than one (O'Neill). Too bad the game was so far away.

But outside of Chaminade or boys' basketball junkies, who had heard of O'Gilvie before the playoffs? He has 55 points in the two playoff games Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Keeping tabs: Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  pitchers Kathryn Nevard and Jodie Cox are off to strong starts for their respective colleges. Nevard is 6-1 for Illinois, including the school's first no-hitter. Cox, at Cal State Fullerton, is 4-2 with three shutouts.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

JORDAN O'GILVIE

Senior, Chaminade Basketball

It would have been one thing if O'Gilvie, a 6-2 guard, had scored his career-high of 35 points in a regular-season game. But the fact he did it in the first round of the Southern Section playoffs, in an overtime game against Ganesha and with Chaminade's best player - forward Scott Borchart - out with a bad ankle, made his special night even more meaningful. It helped the Eagles advance to the second round with a 71-67 victory. O'Gilvie came back two nights later with a team-high 20 points in a victory over Burroughs of Ridgecrest to put Chaminade into the third round tonight against Compton Centennial.

KRYSTAL CLAY

Senior, Grant basketball

Clay, a versatile guard, scored 27 points and added six rebounds as the Lancers lanc·er

, seeded No. 12 in the City Section playoffs, upset No. 5 Gardena on Friday. Clay has the ability to shoot from the perimeter, drive to the basket and beat defenders one-on-one. When senior point guard Deja Cruz was lost to a knee injury this season, Clay had to play the point but teamed with Alexis Weatherspoon to give Grant a one-two scoring combination. Grant faces No. 4 Taft on Wednesday.

HEAD TO HEAD

Matchup of the week:

DEREK RASP

Camarillo, Forward

KYLE KEGLEY

Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , Forward

Rasp, a 6-3 sophomore forward, is a terrific outside shooter, hitting 35 percent of his 3-pointers this year, averaging 10 points on a team that spreads its offense between three players. Rasp scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half Friday to help the Scorpions upset Quartz Hill 65-64 in a Southern Section Division I-AA playoff opener. In the win, Camarillo came back from a 16-point deficit, thanks in part to two 3-pointers from Rasp.

Kegley, like Rasp, is an excellent long-range shooter, but most of all he's a scorer, able to put the ball in the basket whether it's on the perimeter, in transition or to the basket. Thousand Oaks is favored in this game, but if Rasp can contain Kegley and continue his own offensive surge, the Scorpions have a chance.

Today, 7:30 p.m. at Camarillo High.
