In boys' basketball, 11 area teams are entered in the tournament, spread out over six regional sites. At Locke High in Los Angeles, Taft of Woodland Hills and Hart of Newhall are scheduled to compete.

Seven area girls' basketball teams will compete at four regional sites, led by Sylmar at Roosevelt High in Los Angeles. Seven local girls' volleyball teams, including Royal of Simi Valley, will participate in a one-day event one-day event

 of Woodland Hills baseball team have been selected as state teams of the year by Cal-Hi Sports. It marks the first time in the 32-year history of Cal-Hi Sports that a baseball and softball team from the region earned that distinction.

El Camino Real (28-4), the City Section champion, is only the third local baseball team to be selected as the state's top team, joining Kennedy of Granada Hills in 1996 and Rio Mesa of Oxnard in 1985.

Royal (29-2), which won its first Southern Section Div. I title, joined El Camino Real as the only softball team from the region to finish the season as the state's top-ranked team. ...

Pierce College is conducting its annual football passing tournament from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 16. Thirty-two of the top teams in the area are expected to compete. Birmingham of Lake Balboa, Agoura, Dorsey and Sylmar are among the schools already enrolled.
