CHATTER: ARE THE RATINGS RANK?

Byline: Chris Branam Daily News Staff Writer

The first Southern Section basketball rankings came out last week, and the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  boys and Harvard-Westlake girls were ranked No. 1 in their respective divisions.

The Pioneers were ranked ahead of No. 3 Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:

Simi Valley, which beat Sylmar 81-66 on Saturday at the Double Pump Challenge at Cal State Dominguez Hills, isn't ranked in USA Today's Western regional rankings. The Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.  Basketball Coaches Association makes the rankings for the Southern Section. Does it know something USA Today doesn't? . . .

Even though he's running one of the area's top baseball programs, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  coach Phil Torres has been forced to become a creative fund-raiser.

only provides money for varsity baseball, but Torres doesn't want the parents of the players on lower levels to have to pay for such expenses as shoes and travel costs for tournaments. So there were the Falcons players, selling hamburgers before the girls' basketball game against Buena on Saturday. The players also sold Christmas trees in December.

``I try to ease the burden on the parents,'' said Torres, who guided the Falcons to the Southern Section Division I championship last year. . . .

Jordan Olson, Crescenta Valley's all-section senior left-hander, said he hasn't made a decision for college. He wants to improve his SAT score. Torres said there is no doubt Olson will make an impact wherever he plays next year.

``I know (Olson) wants to go to a Pac-10 school,'' Torres said, ``and I know he can win games in the Pac-10.'' . . .

Alemany High plans to break ground on an on-campus gym in March. The boys' and girls' basketball teams, which play their home games at L.A. Baptist, haven't had a gym since it was damaged and condemned in the Northridge Earthquake. . . .

The area's best boys' water polo player - Harvard-Westlake's Peter Hudnut - hasn't made a college commitment yet. He visited Pepperdine, the 1997 NCAA NCAA

Buena girls' basketball coach Joe Vaughan didn't think rankings meant much after the Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in Division I-A, beat unranked Crescenta Valley 60-52 on Saturday.

``(The Falcons) will beat some teams that are ranked, that's for sure,'' Vaughan said. . . .

Give Highland girls' basketball coach Ron Haywood credit for creativity. Haywood, a first-year coach who was an assistant with the Bulldogs last year, lists himself on the roster.

His position: ``Coach.'' His year: ``Freshman.''
