Johnson, a 6-foot-9 center, is the top big man in the Antelope Valley and a Division I college prospect. His departure followed the loss of Antelope Valley coach Mike Vargas, who was replaced by former Highland of Palmdale girls' coach Ed Campbell in the summer.

Vargas, an A.V. graduate, is now the head coach at Paraclete of Lancaster.

``It was tough leaving the school I graduated from, but they wanted to hire a coach who worked on campus, and since I'm an off-campus coach, they went with someone else,'' said Vargas, who was at Antelope Valley for one season.

Antelope Valley Christian coach David Nurse said he welcomes the addition of the highly regarded Johnson, but cautions that much work is still ahead.

``I'm excited, no doubt, but it's still a wait-and-see attitude because you never know how things will work out,'' Nurse said. ``As of right now, our starting five is pretty solid, but we have to get some things worked out as far as our depth. So, for the coaching staff, we have a big challenge ahead of us.''

Vargas said he is looking forward to his first season at Paraclete, although he got a late start after getting hired at the end of the summer.

``It's sort of like when I took over late at A.V.'' Vargas said. ``We really didn't have much time to get any summer work in, so it was uphill all the way.'' ...
