CHATTER: A ROUND OF GOLF -- AND SOME GOOD TALK.Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer Does talking help in golf? Do competitors shoot lower scores if they have people to talk to in between shots? At last week's Southern Section girls' individual championships, the answer was unequivocably . . . it depends on your preference. Some foursomes were downright chatty chat·ty adj. chat·ti·er, chat·ti·est 1. Inclined to chat; friendly and talkative. 2. She shot 29-over-par 101. For Julie McKenna of Newbury Park, talking's a cure. It causes her to focus less on the bad shots. In her foursome, McKenna was the grand cheerleader, encouraging everyone and learning about the golfers she didn't know. ``I've been lucky,'' she said. ``Everyone wants to talk to me.'' In the end, McKenna shot 84 and qualified for today's Women's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Burbank's Moah Chang also qualified with an 83. She played with a quiet group and would have preferred not to. ``If it's quiet, it's boring,'' Chang said. ``It'd be cool if we talked when we're walking.'' Notre Dame's Mayumi Kobayashi didn't talk, but the rest of her foursome did. She said she preferred concentrating on her game. It worked. She shot 79 and qualified. Harvard-Westlake's Emma Stachowicz said it makes no difference. She'll go with the group. On this day, Stachowicz's group didn't talk. So she quietly shot 79, although she had already qualified as a member of Harvard-Westlake's team. . . . HEAD TO HEAD KYLE MATTER Hart, Quarterback JOHN SCIARRA St. Francis, Quarterback Here we go again. For the second consecutive year, Sciarra leads St. Francis into a Southern Section Division III semifinal matchup against Matter and the Indians. Last year, Hart cruised to a 31-14 victory, then beat Valencia to win its second straight title. Sciarra, who is headed to UCLA, led the Golden Knights to a 47-26 victory over Antelope Valley in the quarterfinals Friday, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns to help erase an 11-point deficit. He now has 2,500 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. Matter, who will pay at Stanford, was equally impressive in a 28-23 victory over Crescenta Valley, passing for 247 yards and a touchdown to bring his season totals to 3,208 yards and 32 touchdowns. Both players like to spread things around among several receivers, using vision, savvy and confidence to get the job done. There is not much talent difference between the schools - with perhaps a small edge going to Hart - so the play of Matter and Sciarra should decide the winner.
