CHATSWORTH ATHLETE HELD IN ASSAULT.

Chatsworth High baseball player Matt Fisher was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault while on a recruiting visit to San Diego State University San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system.  last weekend, police said Thursday.

The woman was allegedly assaulted by Fisher, whom she had met earlier, following a fraternity party he had attended at another location, Edwards said.

Fisher, police said, entered the victim's room and assaulted her. The woman awoke, escaped and then was taken to a nearby hospital, Edwards said. After interviewing the woman, police arrested Fisher at his hotel.

The school confirmed Fisher was on an official recruiting visit to San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State. He was sharing a hotel room with another recruit. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review.

Fisher is a senior shortstop at Chatsworth, where he is known for his gritty play. He helped Chatsworth win last spring's Los Angeles City Championship, and was a member of Chatsworth's American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  team that reached the national championship tournament. Also, Fisher was on the 1994 Northridge team dubbed the ``Earthquake Kids'' that played in the Little League World Series.

Jack Fisher, Matt's father, said San Diego State withdrew its offer of a 60-percent scholarship following the arrest.

He said his son vigorously denied the allegation, and he expressed confidence that no charges will be filed. ``It's a damn lie,'' Jack Fisher said. ``Believe me, this thing will never go to trial.''

San Diego State officials distanced themselves from the incident.

``I don't see any negligence at all on our part,'' said San Diego State Athletic Director Rick Bay. ``The alleged victim said our players were not involved with this.''
