CHATSWORTH'S WIN STREAK OVER AT 54 HART'S SECOND CONSECUTIVE UPSET GOOD FOR EASTON TITLE HART 4, CHATSWORTH 3.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The tournament championship will go down as a side note to what the Hart High of Newhall baseball team accomplished Saturday. The Indians ended the longest winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

The loss snapped a streak of 54 consecutive victories for the two-time defending national champion Chancellors, who had not lost since being shut out by Sabino of Tucson, Ariz. on April 15, 2003.

``They came in here with some long winning streak, so this is pretty amazing,'' said Hart shortstop Matt Valaika, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. ``They're a good team, but we knew they could be beaten. We weren't intimidated.''

A two-run home run to right field by Chatsworth sophomore shortstop Mike Moustakas Mike Moustakas (born September 11, 1988 at Chatsworth, California) is a Shortstop[1] who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball 2nd overall in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.  in the seventh inning kept the Chancellors' hopes alive for another of the comebacks that had become a staple of the streak, but the next three batters were retired in order. The streak officially ended with Thomas Cassidy's fly ball to Indians left fielder Ryan Gagnon.

``We got beat,'' Chatsworth coach Tom Meusborn said. ``It's that simple. It's over. It was nice, but we knew it wouldn't last forever. Fifty four obviously is something that's never happened before, so it's special to be a part of it. With as many outstanding teams as there are in the valley and Southern California, you just don't do what we did. It was special.''

The upset was the second in a row for Hart (4-0-1) since learning earlier in the week that standout junior right-hander Tyler Lyon will likely miss the season because of an elbow injury that forced him out of Tuesday's game. Even before back-to-back triples by Valaika and Shane Carlson sparked a rally that put the Indians up 2-0 in the third inning, there were signs this wasn't Chatsworth's day. Chancellors' starter Josh Ravin rav·in also rav·en

Just as uncharacteristic for Chatsworth was the third-inning play on Matt Sreden's grounder to shortstop. Moustakas and third baseman Matt Dominguez collided and failed to field the ball.

Hart also did plenty to help itself.

Junior right-hander Steve Burton (1-0) earned his first varsity win by allowing one run on six hits and no walks in four innings. Sophomore right-hander Donny Williams pitched three innings of two-hit relief for his first save.
