NORTHRIDGE -- A young Pacoima woman fleeing her ex-girlfriend in a 100 mph SUV chase was killed early Saturday when she sped through a red light and crashed into a Metro bus and two other vehicles, police said.

The crash, which critically injured a firefighter on his way to work, occurred after 22-year-old Shayla Phillips frantically dialled 911 from her Lexus SUV, seeking help from police.

``She called and reported she was being chased by a former girlfriend of hers,'' Detective Joel R. Price said.

At Reseda and Roscoe boulevards just after 6 a.m., Phillips' speeding Lexus SUV drove through a red light and slammed into the side of a pickup truck driven by the firefighter, who was heading to work at Station 73 eight blocks away.

The SUV and truck slid across the intersection and hit the stopped bus and a Saab sedan. The impact flipped the firefighter's truck upside down and tore out its engine.

Firefighters from his station were the first to reach the wreckage.

They said, `Oh my God ... it's the engineer who drives the firetruck,' and then they didn't have time to think, they had to get him out; they saw how critical he was.''

Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lexus' rear window was shattered by a bottle thrown by the pursuer, Price said. Detectives are investigating whether the pursuer's SUV hit Phillips' vehicle during the chase. The TrailBlazer shows recent damage, Price said.

The 17-year-old girl was booked on suspicion of murder. She was expected to be taken to Sylmar Juvenile Hall, police said. She was not identified because of her age.

Price said police do not know what precipitated the chase. Phillips' partner told police Phillips had left that morning on her way to work.

The firefighter's name was not immediately released at the request of his family, officials said.
