There would be in some respect some concerns out there.'' The high school board discussed the charter school plan at Wednesday's meeting and tabled the matter. Board President Bill Olenick said the board will take up the proposal again at a meeting on Wednesday, saying there is a 30-day deadline by which the board must act. The proposal, which was rejected in December by the Keppel Union School District, has drawn interest from officials of other schools. Andrejcik said she received calls from other school districts' trustees wanting to know if the high school board approved the charter or not. Hearns could not be reached Thursday for comment. Olenick said other high school board members had not had time to read the lengthy charter proposal and also asked to see a more detailed budget. ``I brought up the issue of severely handicapped students - would they be welcome at the school and would they have staff to address their needs - and, no, they would not be set up to do that,'' Olenick said. Citing concerns over its educational program and whether it would cross the line between church and state, Keppel Union School District trustees turned down the proposed charter school in Littlerock. The Keppel board took the action at a special meeting after district administrators issued a 23-page report recommending that trustees deny the charter petition. Although proponents maintained that the school would offer no religious teaching, the report said it was unlikely that the school would be nonsectarian in its programs and operations. |
