CHARTER BEING DRAWN FOR NEW INDUSTRY GROUP TO ADDRESS BROADBAND CDMA

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack Taylor, president of TSS Associates, under the direction of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) TR45.5 Wideband Spread Spectrum Digital Cellular Subcommittee, is drafting a charter for a new group of the subcommittee to address the features and functions of the next generation technology -- Broadband Code Division Multiple Access (B-CDMA).
Also participating in the drafting effort will be InterDigital Communications Corporation (AMEX: IDC) as well as other companies.
"By exploiting this new technology, both the users and the service providers benefit directly," said Taylor. "A standard based on B-CDMA would be a natural complement to TDMA technology which was adopted as the first digital cellular standard."
InterDigital said it anticipates demonstrating B-CDMA mobile equipment in June 1993. "Along with higher quality voice, high speed data capabilities, and increased capacity, B-CDMA has the unique ability to overlay users on existing AMPS and TDMA service, allowing a smooth and non-disruptive transition to the new technology without obsoleting any of the equipment in place," said Dr. Joseph Garodnick, vice president of corporate development for InterDigital. "The advantages offered by B-CDMA technology provide exciting opportunities to the service operators who are concerned with saturating cells and quality of service."
Taylor said he expects to have a draft Charter ready to present to the TR45.5 Subcommittee in January, at the New Orleans meeting.
