His father, actor Martin Sheen, appeared at a news conference Thursday night to dispel rumors that the younger Sheen had a heart attack and died.

``I was driving in my car and hearing that Charlie Sheen was dead. That's very irresponsible,'' said the elder Sheen, who was at the hospital with his wife, Janet.

He told reporters at a hospital news conference that his son had been tested for drug use but said he didn't know the details because he hadn't had the chance to talk to him.

``My son is here because of a drug overdose,'' he said, choking back tears.

Sheen, 32, who starred in ``Wall Street,'' ``Platoon'' and ``Hot Shots,'' was admitted to the hospital early Wednesday.

His father also made reference to the death of Hugh O'Connor Not to be confused with Hugo Oconór.

Hugh Edward Ralph O'Connor (April 7, 1962 – March 28, 1995) was an American actor, known for his role as Det./ Lt. Lonnie Jamison on In the Heat of the Night from 1988-1995.

Sheen, whose last film was 1997's ``Money Talks,'' has a troubled past.

In 1990, he checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility because he was ``suffering from extreme exhaustion due to an arduous filming schedule,'' publicist Jeff Ballard said at the time.

In 1995, a woman sued Sheen, alleging the actor hit her in the head several times when she refused to have sex with him.

He also admitted in videotaped testimony at the 1995 federal trial of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss that he ordered her call girls at least 27 times, running up a tab of more than $50,000.

In early 1996, Sheen announced that he planned to divorce model Donna Peele after less than six months of marriage.

Later that year, Sheen renounced his party lifestyle, saying he was a born-again Christian and that fast living ``was a lot of fun, but there is such a thing as too much fun. . . . It gets redundant. How many times can you wake up and struggle to remember your name, her name and where you are?''
