CHARLIE FINDS ANGELS, DREAMS ON THE ROAD.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

VALENCIA - He's a man with a mutt, a mule and a mission.

When Charles Robert ``Charlie Bob'' Martin left Florida 3 1/2 years ago, he was determined to get his dog, his trick mule and himself an appearance on the ``Tonight'' show with Jay Leno Jay Leno (born April 28, 1950) is an Emmy-winning American comedian, writer who is best known as the current host of NBC television's long-running variety and talk program The Tonight Show. Since leaving Milton, Fla., Martin has walked all across the country, and he may soon live his dream and get his 15 minutes of fame.

``For 3 1/2 years my goal has been to get my mule on the `Tonight' show,'' said Martin, 58. ``She's very beautiful and very talented.''

Martin acquired his mule Louella, whom he politely calls ``Miss Ella,'' - in 1983 in New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S). , where he traded a horse for her. Ever since, he has trained her and done what he could to promote her.

``She loves the audience and the people,'' said Martin, now staying in Valencia with local businessman Steve Kennedy. ``She does all her tricks very ladylike la·dy·like

Among her 36 routines, Miss Ella fetches the paper, blows a kiss, dances in march rhythm, gets drinks from an ice chest, removes Martin's hat and takes a well-deserved bow.

``People haven't seen anything like her,'' Martin raved.

But Martin has taught Louella a special trick for their visit with Jay Leno, a motorcycle buff. She plays motorcycle while Martin pretends to be riding a Harley-Davidson.

``I like him,'' Ridgeway said. ``We just don't have a decision yet.''

Martin and Louella lost the mutt who started traveling with them from Florida. Hunters mistook the dog for game and killed it. One thing Martin said he has learned in his travels is that people are genuinely nice.

``They have invited me into their homes. I've lived with the homeless. I've lived with the millionaires.''

``People have been real good to me,'' Martin said. ``I call them angels.''
