CHARISMATIC CHOICE; EX-CLAIMER BEST HORSE; BAFFERT TOP TRAINER.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

Charismatic, the one-time claiming horse who pulled up lame on the doorstep of the Triple Crown last spring, won admission to the exclusive Horse of the Year club Monday.

But his trainer D. Wayne Lukas Darrell Wayne Lukas (born September 2, 1935 in Antigo, Wisconsin) is a former educator who became one of the most successful horse trainers in American Thoroughbred horse racing history and a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee.  was snubbed by Eclipse Award voters, losing out to leading money winner Bob Baffert Bob Baffert (born January 13, 1953 in Nogales, Arizona) is an American horse owner and trainer. He graduated from the University of Arizona's Racetrack Management Program with a Bachelor of Science degree.  for the outstanding-trainer honor even though Lukas dominated the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982 by a consortium of North American racing organizations, led by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. , thoroughbred racing's biggest events.

Bob and Beverly Lewis' Charismatic was named Horse of the Year for 1999 after prevailing in the complex Eclipse balloting process, winning a plurality in two of the three voting blocs, National Turf Writers Association The National Turf Writers Association (NTWA) is an American association of journalists, columnists and other writers involved with reporting on the horse racing industry.  secretaries.

The Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby

One of the classic U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. It was established in 1875 and run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Ky. With the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, it makes up U.S. racing's coveted Triple Crown.
and Preakness winner's triumph was distinctive for several reasons: He's the first Horse of the Year in the three-decade Eclipse era to run in a claiming race during his championship season, having been risked for $62,500 at Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:
  • Santa Anita Park in California, USA
  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
in February; and he's the first not to race beyond June, having been retired to stud after fracturing a leg while finishing third in the Belmont Stakes.

The vote was the most splintered ever. Charismatic had just 25.3 percent of the 219 votes of the three blocs' members. A dozen horses were named on at least one ballot. Ten voters left the Horse of the Year line blank.

Charismatic totaled 55 1/2 votes (some ballots were split), Daylami 38 1/2, sprinter Artax 36 1/2. The votes included a silly one for Saluter, a steeplechase steeplechase

horse who didn't even lead the steeplechase division.

The results reflect a season in which several Horse of the Year contenders ran poorly with a chance to clinch the prize in the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup races in Florida.

Harder to explain is Lukas' loss to Baffert, whose outstanding-trainer Eclipse is his third in a row, matching Lukas' 1985-87 streak. Baffert won the Racing Form and racing-secretaries blocs; Lukas won with the turf writers. Baffert topped Lukas 104-88 in total votes.

Maybe Baffert's $16.8 million-$12.1 million lead in 1999 barn earnings were more persuasive than Lukas' Derby, Preakness and Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1ΒΌ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup.  (Cat Thief) and Juvenile Fillies (Cash Run). Yet voters gave double-Breeders' Cup winner Jorge Chavez the outstanding-jockey Eclipse even though he was third to Pat Day and Jerry Bailey in earnings.

Or maybe Lukas lost a personality contest. Lukas has made enemies in the racing media in the past 15 years, whereas Baffert is only starting to rub people the wrong way.

``I really didn't expect it,'' Baffert said of the award. ``The best wins are the ones you don't expect.''

Eclipse trophies were handed out Monday night at a dinner in Beverly Hills, a fitting location since of the past 14 Horse of the Year winners, 12 raced at Southern California tracks and eight were based in the state. Charismatic ran fourth in the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000.  before winning at 12-1 odds in the Lexington Stakes, 31-1 in the Kentucky Derby and 8-1 in the Preakness.

In addition to Horse of the Year, Charismatic easily won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding 3-year-old.

Also leading all three voting blocs: Baffert-trained Silverbulletday (3- year-old filly) and Chilukki (2-year-old filly), Daylami (turf male), Artax (sprinter), Anees (2-year-old male), Beautiful Pleasure (older female) and Soaring Softly (turf female).

The closest decision among the equine divisions found Victory Gallop beating out Behrens for outstanding older male. Victory Gallop won the support of the Racing Form and racing secretaries, and overall received 99 of the 219 votes to Behrens' 96.

Other winners: Santa Anita chairman Frank Stronach (outstanding horse owner), Will Farish (breeder) and Ariel Smith (apprentice jockey).

NOTES - Lady at Peace, racing for her second owner and third trainer in three months, set a slow pace under Garrett Gomez and won the San Gorgonio Handicap The San Gorgiono Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year.
