FORMER England football star Mick Channon Michael Roger 'Mick' Channon (born 28 November 1948 in Orcheston, Wiltshire, United Kingdom) is a sportsman who enjoyed a career as a feared football goalscorer with Southampton and England in the 1970s and later became a hugely successful racehorse trainer.  was lucky to be alive last night after a devastating car crash that killed one of his best friends.

The 59-year-old, being treated in intensive care for broken ribs, a broken arm, fractured jaw and a punctured lung, was being driven home by Tim Corby when his silver Mercedes swerved off the M1 and smashed into a concrete pillar.

Mr Corby, 63, a well-known figure in the horse racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with  world, died at the scene, close to junction 24 southbound near Leicester, at 4.19pm on Wednesday.

Mick's 15-year-old son Jack, who was in the back of the car, amazingly escaped with only minor cuts and bruises.

Father and son were airlifted to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre The Queen's Medical Centre (popularly known as QMC or Queen's Med) situated in Nottingham, England, is the largest hospital in the United Kingdom. It was officially opened by the Queen on 28 July 1977, and admitted its first patient in 1978.  for treatment.

Mick's eldest son Michael, 33, said the striker-turned-racehorse trainer had a "tough old night" in intensive care. He is due to have surgery today.

He added: "We have been petrified pet·ri·fy

"But as for the Corbys, our hearts really go out to them. Tim was a friend of Mick's for over 30 years. He was a renowned figure in the racing scene who was universally popular in the industry and he will be sorely missed.

"Mick is conscious and able to talk from his hospital bed and he's absolutely devastated at the loss of Tim."

Mr Corby, of Newbury, Berks, leaves wife Sheila and daughter Adriana. Police are investigating the cause of the crash, - which closed the road for four hours - although no other vehicle was involved.

Mick had two spells with Southampton, played for Manchester City and scored 21 goals in 46 games for England in the 1970s. He had been returning to his stables near Lambourne, Berks, after attending Doncaster horse sales.

He took up training racehorses in 1990 and handles a string of nearly 200 throughbreds at the historic West Ilsley stables, once owned by the Queen.

He has earned millions in prize money and has been in the winner's enclosure at Royal Ascot.

Mick, who is married to wife Jill, has trained horses for ex-England team-mate Kevin Keegan and Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
