CHANNELING OSCAR HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE CEREMONY - AND FROM THE REST OF THE DAY ON TV.

Byline: - Sandra Barrera and Valerie Kuklenski

In a perfect world the Academy Awards would dazzle, surprise and genuinely entertain viewers from start to finish, leaving us thinking, ``Gee, it's over already?''

in a bit of his own creation. (There will be a five-second delay; so watch for blips.)

But while Crystal and the other comedy writers usually make hay with the Hollywood topic of the week, ``The Passion of the Christ'' is a dicey subject for punch lines and sight gags and probably will be all but off-limits.

As for that chronic problem of the show running extremely long, it may help that there is only one honorary award this year, for writer-director Blake Edwards. But there is no reason to expect producer Joe Roth, a former studio chief and novice in the realm of television, to succeed in compressing the program where so many others have failed.

So what if ``The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'' has a lock on the best picture category? We recommend staying with ABC to the bitter end to the last extremity, however calamitous.
