CHANNEL MARKETING SAYS 34 PERCENT OFU.S. HOUSEHOLDS NOW HAVE PERSONAL COMPUTERS

CARROLLTON, Texas, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Many major retailers and manufacturers enjoyed a record-setting year selling personal computers during 1993. However, 1994 will produce even better results.
Personal computers sold for home use comprised an estimated 6 million units during 1993. This number includes systems that were used for small business purposes in the home. According to the most current results tabulated by Channel Marketing Corp. through December, there are now 36 million personal computers installed in approximately 33 million households in the United States.
Those companies in the PC business will see another boom year in 1994, primarily due to the continuation of declining prices and an avid interest in multimedia systems incorporating a CD-ROM drive and sound card. Entertainment and education have again become important factors in the purchase of a PC for the home, and a proliferation of game and education software and CD-ROM titles co-exist with business and productivity titles.
Channel Marketing predicts that personal computers sold to the home market will increase by 50 percent in 1994 from 1993. This translates to estimated 1994 sales of approximately 9.3 million computers to the homes of America. Retailers will be scrambling for their business over the next year.
With the downsizing of personnel and cuts in budgets within corporations and governments nationwide, the home and small business markets represent the largest growth segment in the PC industry. It is projected that 36 percent of all sales of personal computers will be absorbed by home users during 1994.
