A dedicated student, Lin was faced with a tough decision when she realized that she couldn't do as well in her schoolwork if she maintained her commitment to the Canyon volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. Lin carries a 4.4 grade-point average and is taking honors classes, including British literature British literature is literature from the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. By far the largest part of this literature is written in the English language, but there are also separate literatures in Latin, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Scots, Cornish, Manx, , math analysis, and advanced placement and physics. She also enjoys sports competition, but volleyball just didn't fit in. So, one week before school started, Lin asked Canyon tennis coach Marlene Holomon to include her on that team. The sport seems a perfect fit for Lin because much of the practice is independent. Her class schedule cuts into the first hour of team tennis practice, but Lin can practice on her own. Her whole family plays tennis. ``I wanted some exercise, and if I had some problems in my game I could always ask my dad,'' said Lin, who is playing No. 3 singles for Canyon. Lin still doesn't have much time. She takes a class all day every Saturday to prepare for the scholastic assessment test (SAT). She does about three hours of homework every night. She's hoping the hard work will pay off with a scholarship to Stanford, where she'd like to study psychology or law. For Holomon, having Lin on the team is a nice addition, even if it is a couple of years later than she would have liked. ``She would have been a varsity player from her freshman year on,'' Holomon said. ``She came up to me and said, `I'm coming out,' and I said, `It's about time It's About Time may refer to:
Holomon already was coaching Lin's older brother, Gene, a senior at Canyon, on her team. ``She's not as good as she would have been,'' Holomon said. Lin understands that, but doesn't regret the time she spent on volleyball. ``It's a great team sport, and I love playing it,'' said Lin, who played setter setter: see sporting dog. setter Any of three breeds derived from a medieval hunting dog that would set (lie down) when it found birds so that it and the birds could be covered with a net. And while she enjoys the individual nature of playing tennis singles, Lin sees herself as a team player, always cheering on her teammates. ``Personally, when I'm playing and I hear someone cheer for me, it helps, so I think it's great to cheer on other people,'' she said. Said Holomon: ``She's always encouraging everyone and is real inspiring. She's a good kid to have on any team.''
