CHANGES FOR COPPER CURTAIN MAY COST AS MUCH AS $200,000.

Byline: Cecilia Chan Daily News Staff Writer

It's going to cost a pretty penny to put a new face on the much-maligned Copper Curtain - somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000.

A company has responded to the city's request for proposals to redesign the $150,000, 50-by-50-foot artwork of copper strips that was installed five years ago on the outside wall of the Civic Arts Plaza.

``Just one company responded to the several options,'' said Tom Mitze, city theater director, who was charged with finding a design team. He declined to name the firm because the information has not yet gone before the City Council.

Mitze said he thinks the uniqueness of the project is the reason only one company responded.

``The Copper Curtain is hanging up 100 feet in the air outside of the building,'' he said. ``It's unusual, really. It's a work of sculpture as well as an architectural feature.''

The company did not respond with a cost proposal to the city's option of removing the curtain and painting a mural mural

City Manager MaryJane Lazz said the material will be presented to the City Council in the next month or so for review.

Where the money to pay for the project will come from has not been determined, she said, adding: ``We will give the council a number of different options.''

Last year the council approved up to $20,000 to hire the design team to do the work.

If the council moves forward on the face-lift, the city still would need to go out for proposals to find a company to the actual work, Mitze said.
