It was also the biggest opening since ``Lethal Weapon 4'' rolled out with $34 million on July 10-12.

`` `Rush Hour's' performance was remarkable,'' said Robert Bucksbaum, president of Reel Source Inc., noting that studios expect attendance to drop off sharply during the fall season because of the start of school. ``New Line was able to get a buzz going about it at schools, which is where these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Analyst Barry Hyman of Ehrenkrantz King Nussbaum gave New Line credit for taking advantage of a relative lack of competition after the summer season. ``This is not the time of year for big hits like this,'' he said. ``This makes Jackie Chan Jackie Chan SBS, (born April 7, 1954), also known as Sing Lung in Cantonese (Traditional Chinese: 成龍; Simplified Chinese: 成龙  a true American movie star.''

The previous record-holder for best opening during the early September-early November season was ``First Wives Club,'' which opened with $18.9 million two years ago on its way to $105 million domestically. Bucksbaum said ``Rush Hour'' should be able to top $100 million.

New Line distribution chief Al Shapiro said ``Rush Hour'' played to numerous sell-outs and generated broad-based support in all markets. ``There were lots of families that saw `Rush Hour' together and our exit polling showed that there should be a lot of repeat business,'' he said.

New Line also set a record for its own best opening, breaking the $25.3 million mark held by the 1990 release of ``Teenage Mutant (programming) mutant - Microsoft's term for a mutex which is generally used in user mode but can also be used in kernel mode. ``With worries about President Clinton's problems and the economy, people are really in the mood for a comedy,'' Bucksbaum said. ``That's why `Something About Mary' is doing such phenomenal business.''

``Mary,'' now in its 11th week, continued to draw well with $5.7 million at 2,543 theaters as it lost only 24 percent from the previous weekend despite direct competition from ``Rush Hour.'' Its overall take has hit $147.2 million.
